Holdem Poker - Playing with Community Cards

Something scenic

The origination of the game poker has been debated for many years. But most believe that the game pochspiel, derived from 15th century Germany, was one of the first card games played that utilized the same fundamentals that we do today for Holdem poker. Like poker, it combined the use of hand ranking, betting, and bluffing in efforts to beat your opponents and win the pot.

Texas Holdem, otherwise know as Holdem Poker, is the most popular form of poker played in American casinos to date. It’s popularity can be attributed to massive exposure on television, online game-play, and the potential to win large amounts of money in very little time. The history of Holdem Poker trails back to the early 1900’s, where the Texas State Legislature declared Robstown, Texas the birth place of what is now called Texas Holdem.

What is Community Card Poker and Community Cards?

Holdem Poker is a variation of community card poker that involves the use of five community cards along with two “pocket” cards dealt to players by either a central dealer or by each player in turn. The object of the game is to use a combination of the poker cards available in the community cards as well as the pocket cards to create the highest rated poker hand possible. The player with the highest hand wins and takes the pot either to move on to the next game in a tournament or take home the winnings. The pot is the combined total of chips that are wagered by the players in a single hand or game.

How Do You Play with the Holdem Poker Community Poker Cards?

  1. Remember that even though there are 5 community cards you shouldn’t use all of them to make a hand. Everyone else can do the same thing so winning is a problem.
  2. Be aware of hands that can be easily made with the community cards, especially hands that you don’t hold but other players could.
  3. When the community poker cards haven’t been dealt yet this is one of the best times to really read the other players to gauge the strength of their unknown hole cards before the community cards skew things.
  4. After the flop of the first 3 community cards this is when players will get the best idea of whether they can make a hand with their hole cards. If there aren’t many options this would be a good time to fold.
  5. Learn to adjust your odds each time a community card is laid down. That’s one less possible card in the deck which will affect the odds entirely.
  6. If there is signs of a possible hand in the community cards this is one of the best times to keep up a bluff you have going.
